Update H.R. 4302 was passed by both the House and Senate in March 2014, and was signed into law by President Obama April 1, 2014. H.R. 4302 delays the requirement of ICD-10 codes until October 1, 2015.

Background
The International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems 10th Revision (ICD-10) is a coding of diseases and signs, symptoms, abnormal findings, complaints, social circumstances and external causes of injury or diseases, as classified by the World Health Organization (WHO). The code set allows more than 69,000 different codes and permits tracking of many new diagnoses and procedures, a significant expansion on the 14,000 codes available in ICD-9.
